Working on small projects in London and beyond, MD/works focuses on maintaining a link between the design and delivery (the thinking and doing) of architecture.
MD/works designs and builds projects end-to-end, or collaborates with others to produce outcomes that exceed the means available. Operating with respect for the many skills, materials and individuals that create structures, spaces and objects – where the plumbing behind the wall is just as valuable as the art that hangs on it – MD/works strives to champion these often overlooked assets.
It’s run by Miles, who has kept a foot in both design and construction for the last 5 years since graduating from the Royal College of Art in 2021 (MA Architecture) - working on bespoke construction jobs across London with John Perkins Projects, as well as his own builds of various scales.
Active projects in 2026 include the renovation of a 19th-century schoolhouse in the Cotswolds, the design of a pair of houses in Catford, an ultra-low budget extension in Peckham, and ongoing custom furniture builds for businesses and individuals.

A conversation pit cum fitted sofa made from solid Douglas Fir.
Designed to maximise the seating area in a small room that had an awkward underpinned perimeter. The structural base utilises a cantilevered beam to bring the sofa out towards an existing window without clashing with the radiator.

Planning: Oakwood
Ongoing works to a dilapidated Victorian school house in the countryside. A complete overhaul of the existing school building creates the main residential space with thermal upgrades throughout and new openings. The existing 60’s extension is demolished to make way for a new stone and timber pavilion structure to house an art gallery and bedrooms.
The new pavilion sits within the conservation area context with a traditional gabled roof and ashlar walling above the ground floor. Separated by a precast concrete ring beam, the ground floor openings below pick up on the typical stone mullioned windows found in the village.
A suite of landscaped elements and structures completes the arrangement and makes a long-lasting home out of an awkward site in the heart of the village.

A price-conscious extension to a Victorian terrace in South East London. Due to low ceiling heights and the motivation for an internal sauna, the plan arrangement retains the corner structure of the existing outrigger. A departure from the typical strategy of installing dropped steel beams to carry the floor above, this arrangement creates a range of smaller spaces to the rear of the house instead of one big kitchen/dining/living room.

A new espresso bar on Caledonian Road for Conscious Speciality Coffee to showcase their roasts and provide a direct-to-customer retail space.
The awkward room shape encouraged a simple layout centred on an end-grain douglas-fir counter, which provides a point of difference from the lightweight frames, shelves and seating. The counter takes references from butcher blocks and baking trays - a sunken stainless steel insert sits below the countertop to hold the mess created by high-volume coffee making.
Moments of stainless steel sit alongside bright stained timber and continue the restained palette throughout the rest of the fitted furniture.

Whilst the site sits empty waiting for construction to start, we took the opportunity to prototype some of the key furniture and joinery moves being proposed for OS2 - The Old School. Materials salvaged from the Mutimer Pop-up were used, and over 2 days, a 1:1 model of the kitchen island and back counter was created in the large school room.
This lead to the introduction of a seat set into the back counter under the window

Plywood cutting: Balls Pond Road Joinery
Built over 5 days in Greek Street for Mutimer’s first in-person retain event in the UK. Made from 12mm hardwood plywood and finished in Osmo with a wise use of 8x4 sheets as we’ve come to expect from Lorenzo.

The conversion of a workshop/garage into a new home in the backstreets of Catford. Planning was granted in 2025 for an ambitious scheme that sought to add a new basement level and first-floor extension to create a three-bedroom home and workspace. A simple palette of stock brick bricks, cast concrete, and galvanised metal screens gave the new structure an industrial quality both inside and out.
The project has recently undergone a full redesign to create two separate dwellings.

Two matching bedside units made from Foresso and stainless steel. Two mitred boxes make up the body with a bespoke folded stainless steel handle to operate the drawer within that matches the cylindrical pedestals below.

Life has been given to Clissold House in the form of a new cafe and restaurant by the Finks team. A suite of joinery takes cues from Georgian dressers alongside a bold colour palette working across the 4 main rooms. John Perkins Projects oversaw the build, with joinery being delivered by the team at Craftworks Productions.
The main cafe room features an oversized counter made from curved ply and stainless steel counters, which is set in the middle of the room against a backdrop of more traditional units. In the dining room, a new curved seating arrangement sits in front of the bay window.
